benching rant

well...this section is for my irrelevant opinion ;)

I hate seeing low-mid end GPUs benched alongside £600 CPUs with £700+ cascade cooling. Its crap, its never gonna happen in real-life and it aint what good benching is all about.*

Theres a lot of things in the scene that really annoy me and wind me up a LOT and I hate the fact that very few ppl agree with me because "its all for points and personal (or team) glory" Y'know I had to reason with someone to NOT cheat the other day? WTF is that alla bout? Is benching that shallow now? POINTS AT ALL COSTS?

*it also happens the other way- using I-RAM and top-end GPUs for PCMark to make old CPUs shine so much brighter than they are.

We could sort out the BS around 3D LOD and mipmaps by having someone release a DOS box MFLOP test for GPU setups. If no-one cares about the image quality, or if theres an image at all (!!!!) then 3DMark becomes utterly pointless (even more so than it already is)

[/rant] I feel no better, but I hate where benching is going.

So what do you want then Kenny..?? Bench only with cpu's that were out at the same time as the graphics cards..??

But as you run on dice, if you had the top end cpu wouldn't you run cheap graphics cards..?? Easy points, the system and the rules are there to be used to their fullest extent.

Would you rather we ran just on air for P3's and below.? Or air on Geforce6 and below.?

The whole thing on here is if you have the mula you get the points, live with it dude, it grates me too, I'd love the freebies too. I'm desperate for a quad, my scores are screwed without it but I just bench whatever I can get me hands on and do all the benches.

But I am in agreement over the LOD and MipMap thing, I reckon the Futuremark benches should reset the graphics settings before the bench, like they do with the resolution that way it'll get rid of the cheats who run graphical benches without the graphics.

Dave. :)

I know where you're coming from and I agree- cant have me cake and eat it, but if existing scores/clockspeeds in a category are "civilised" I wont go and "ruin" it- I approach it as a gentlemans agreement. Id never break out the dice for...say... my 6800XT runs etc theres no satisfaction in beating a Ford Escort with a Dodge Viper in a one mile straight.

I don't see any issue with benching a very cheap videocard with an expensive processor / motherboard / cooling. It isn't even unrealistic, not everyone builds a monster gaming pc, but many build a very fast pc with a cheap videocard. Eg. until my 8800GT arrived last week, I had a Volari X3 in my Asrock 4coredual-sata + Q6600 'G0'. I don't game much on my pc.

I do agree that many 3dmark tweaks are over the top. If it's a tweak that hurts image quality, imho it should not be allowed. Unfortunately, it's an unrealistic demand as there is no way to check it and a huge gray area for the rules.

I think it would be great if futuremark incorporated a check somehow, that compares the generated images with a prerendered one. If it differs too much, the bench should be invalid.

its normal for human race to go further, faster, higher u cant stop it everyone will do everything that is in his powres to make the better/best score so this is what i ve to say bout benching hardware combination

if its bout 3dmark "tweaks" which cant be prooved lets make em legal lol

Evidently you don't look at the misbalanced PCs they sell in big-box shops.

EXTREME GAMER MODEL: Core 2 Quad 9xxx + upgraded graphics to a HD2600 Pro!

Plus, that's so the wrong way to succeed at this. Throwing 500MHz more CPU at 3DMark doesn't do nearly as much as getting a graphics card that clocks up well.

As for the "Gentleman's Agreement" - to an extent, there's a "what's stopping them from matching you" aspect. Especially in the older hardware classes, the gear is almost "disposable".

I'd sort of love to get a really good Socket A board and a nice Super 7 board, and see what I can really wring out of my old K6-233, XP 2000+, and Athlon 1.2C.

Holy thread revival! :P

IMO P-ATA HDDs dont make enough difference to warrant any kind of "boo-hoo" and O.S. doesnt really fall into the category of who has the most money to fling at the hobby.

Software can appear on the net, cascades dont (unless im looking on the wrong torrent sites....)
