This is the general MSI MOA 2011 overclocking competition thread. We try to collect all information on the different aspects of MSI MOA 2011 qualifiers.
1. Structure of the MSI MOA 2011 event
There are three levels of competition:
- National: several online, live and handpicked contestants are selected from the countries (or group of countries) to compete in the live Regional finals.
- Regional: three live finals (Americas, EMEA and APAC) and two online competitions.
- Grand Final: one worldwide final is held in Taipei, featuring overclockers from all around the world.
There are two types of competition:
- Live: competitors meet in one location and compete with hardware provided by MSI and its partners
- Online: competitors compete online for a spot in a live final

It's again a matter of having the largest wallet (990X + GTX580), not necessarily being the best oc'er :-( The French competition sounds like much more fun.
We'll there will always be debates on who got a nice cpu and who got a nice gpu, but one thing is for sure, elmor has won almost every competition, because he simply is the best haha. I think the competitions are fair enough.

Me and Fugger got #4 place at Vegas and i can t go...
We lose about only 12 points in the 3DM11...witha a crap CPU (and good VGA)..
That s a pity i can t go at this year...is the most wonderful overclocking competition that i know...

If you're referring to the event in Las Vegas: that was the first live final for the Americas. It's similar to the live final in Istanbul for EU.
As far as I know, like any year, there should also be another Lords of Overclocking at FM. Not confirmed, though.

If you're referring to the event in Las Vegas: that was the first live final for the Americas. It's similar to the live final in Istanbul for EU.
As far as I know, like any year, there should also be another Lords of Overclocking at FM. Not confirmed, though.

I wouldn't mind another 1-2 in the EU finals, no. Can't say I approve of the one team for the nordics though, but I still figure that Denmark will do what it does best and that basically it'll be SF3D with great results in Finland. But it is a way to raise the standard, but you could've skipped Denmark right away, that would've been easier. :D

1x semi-dead 980X (One ram channel is dead)

And a shitty DCU II
~1230mhz max complete run.
Both 990X could have changed that 32M for certain, but, enough talking, it did not show by the end of the day... Not on speed, on effeciency.
... Oh and; The UD9 gave a big sparkle from PWM, killed chip and motherboard instantly, it was at first boot for the session, ambient temp pot, as we were to install OS, and with CLEAR CMOS.... lol..
That was how the 990X died...
The 990X ES just showed up as "BIOS error" on R3E, and would not get past BIOS on the UD3R (my board), at random part... We swapped CPU, before swap there wasnt really any problem with the chip.
980X ES, no idea how/why it lost a channel, MAYBE Oliver just managed to kill a channel my UD3R by lifting it on the sides while a pot was mounted, I'll chop his head off if the chip turns out to work on another board.... Because, hell will freeze over before I'll get another motherboard, last one took 335 days to get to my place.

But if you fail to advance to the EU finals, at least you can call it a draw.
I'm not sure. We didn't draw against each other.
It's a complex system we're playing in. Sometimes it counts double, sometimes I get a penalty for winning EU contests. Need to read the manual again.
Also remember no all countrys go to the final EU, Spain is forgotten.... for third year!

For those interested about MOA France; three teams are already qualfied online, we had to bench SuperPi 16M, Wprime1024M & MaxxMem on AMD 870 motherboard + Athlon II x2.
Tomorow we'll meet in a well known Computer Shop (Surcouf) in Paris to compete. Hardware will be MSI XPower + 990x ES + MSI HD6870 Hawk and three bench to discover. :)

We took first place in 3DM11 with ASUS DIRECT CU 1420/1330 with p67-ud4b3 board and third place in SPi 32m with p67-ud4b3. The board’s bios was terrible and was almost impossible to play 1:8 with Corsair’s GTX2 but we manage to make a decent 1.57.281 32m and that was it.

Bios for p67a-ud4-be F3b.
In my previews board P67a-ud7 1:8 divider even with 4 sticks of ram worked fine and with tighter timmings.

One important sidenote here is that this competition is not just about overclockers, but about 'extreme overclockers'. Basically, you want people representing your country that understand the system that is being benched on and that understand how liquid nitrogen works. There needs to be a balance between opening the qualifications for as much people as possible and not setting them up in a way basically everyone, regardless of experience/skill, can win.
An example.
In last year's MOA EU 2010, the hardware was 980X + GTX480. If you have no experience with liquid nitrogen, you simply can't do well in the competition due to the necessity of understanding coldbug/coldbootbug behavior. Also, someone with no X58 experience is doomed to fail: there's a delicate balance between the various voltages (vcore, vtt), frequencies (unc affect dram) and of course performance (low uncore means low performance). There needs to be a basic understanding of all this to be able to defend your country's honor in an international competition. Software tweaks and optimisations are nice, but the essence of 'overclocking' is not tuning the software, but increasing the operating frequencies.
Don't see this ending too well unless you make up for a lot of lost time here.
There are still 3 weeks to go, so ... why don't you guys get together and go over the tricks of the X58 platform and liquid nitrogen? You could make a video, post some pics, have a bench-weekend etc etc.
Seeing that more people care about the OC might give the UK office some incentive to make more work of the qualifiers next year.

Remarkable: MSI is limiting the CPU ratio to 50x for the SuperPI-32M round. Not as far as what I hoped for, but as long as the chips are pre-binned to all do ~100MHz within each other, this should be just fine. Would suck to see one team do 5500MHz and the other 4800MHz
Also hoping the growth baseline is more appropriate than last year. Baseline should not be non-overclocked score, but should be expected overclock. If baseline is not chosen correctly, there's an imbalance between stages. Last year, for instance, an excellent SPI-32M result meant pretty much nothing in comparison to the 3D Vantage score.

And yes... one ram divider below max, loose timings, no cpu-tweaker, no CW, 200mhz uncore low... 6 min 9 sec... oh and about 150mhz left in the chip... Yes; I would put my money on that doing more then 10s difference with ease, aim was really more 5:50 or 5:45....
But sometimes shift happens, gonna enjoy watching massman fail this weekend.

Was again nice meeting the fellas at MSI. Especially Viss (congrats on the kid!!), who didn't have luck on his side this time. "Next year", he promised, and I will make him stick to that promise! :D
Also good to see Leeghoofd and Teemto putting up decent scores on their own. First time they were completely in charge and apart from some errors, they did pretty well! I'm sure there will be more competition soon from them.
Also pretty cool to find out we can save a lot of energy by fine-tuning the mainboard.

Also For ECO test ... we had to run the 06 forest with FPS above 60 ^^ with the lowest power consumption possible.
