View Full Version : MSI Afterburner Extreme - how to get it?

Alright, decided to make a little sticky to help inform you guys how this Afterburner Extreme thing works.

First things first.

Afterburner Extreme is basically an unlocked version of the MSI Afterburner overclocking software. It gives a wider range of voltages and frequencies and is meant for extreme overclocking. Because it gives a wider range of voltage options, it's not available in public. I think you're all smart enough to understand this, right? We don't want Mister or Misses Newbie to use the AB Xtreme and enable 'full throttle' with 1.8V vgpu and 2G on air cooling.

So, what if you're an extreme(ly careful) overclocker and you want to use the Afterburner Extreme? Well, there's only one way to get a custom version: contact your local MSI rep and request a version. The local rep will then forward the request to HQ and HQ will feed the software back to local. Just so you know, HQ expects the local rep to be responsible for your actions. So, if you let HQ down by, for instance, sharing the Afterburner in public, you'll also get your local rep in trouble.

A few notes:

1) This software is considered pretty dangerous by the MSI warranty department. You, as overclocker, must understand that getting this software also means that you have to waive some rights like warranty on the cards you might or might not brick.

2) Although I applaud sharing within the community, the Afterburner Extreme is not meant to be shared. The .exe file contains not only your nickname, but also timestamps. In other words, if it gets out MSI might blacklist you from any future versions.

3) Don't expect your request to be approved instantly. As said before, this software is considered unsafe for regular users and MSI will only hand it out to overclockers they trust. So, when you're applying for a version, make sure both your local contact as HQ is convinced you can be trusted. With great power comes great responsibility.

4) Don't be an idiot. If you get the software, respect the NDA and other agreements. If you don't get it, don't start ranting in public how unfair you've been treated. Like I said before ... it's all about the trust!

5) Seriously, don't be an idiot.

6) Barbecue is nice in the summer, but a little strange in the winter.

if MSI are so afraid of RMAs, why don't they limit their motherboards to, say, 1.5V on Vcore and then make users bend over for the "special" BIOS?

How is NDA going to be enforced?? All a user has to do is cover up the username in AB.

Plus, AB works on non-MSI cards too! *shock* Much like Asus allowing Intel CPUs to be fed with 2vCore... it ain't Asus problem if the CPU dies. Why would MSI care if I set fire to a Sapphire card?

Lol. I don't think that's helping you gaining trust of local reps :D

They wouldn't.

I've never lied to vendors. If they send me stuff, i'm going to be honest in my public review. The stuff is probably gonna die. I am very unlikely to take any world records because that means going up against guys who have access to hundreds of CPUs and/or cheaper LN2. (I leave out the skill part)

The worst thing a company can do to me is promise that my tomorrow is the same as my today and yesterday- no support. I've been doing this for 8 years. It clearly doesn't keep me awake at night.

:D

Hello MSI. While keeping all the above in mind, please can I have Afterburner Extreme? :D

No. :D

That answer is one billion times better than the number of times I hear "sure, i'll send you one" only for nothing to appear at my doorstep. (not MSI, never asked them for anything)

Well, if it were up to me, I'd help you. But since I don't suddenly want all of HWBOT sending me PMs and these are handled on a local basis, I'll only help those in need in my territory. :)

Glad to see I created a little positive PR by flat out refusing though. :D

If you work for MSI, you could at least go and help Jon at Computex :p

Nah, I'd rather stay home, distributing AB Extreme to all of Sweden and Finland instead. :D

Its a killer software. MSI has all the rights to share it to proper individuals. Thanks for the clarification Massman.

They had the master version at day after MOA 2011 demo, where you just add device id and controller info lmao but alas it was tightly guarded.
