Default Re: Why is Ryzen 8 core against FX CPU's??

Bulldozer architecture has only 4 Modules but each Module has 2 "integer cores" and share the rest like caches. We can now argue if it really has 8 Cores in its 4 Modules or the 4 Modules (Cores) can execute 8 Threads. Im not a technical expert in this, so I cant say if AMD created really a CPU that qualifies for an octa core CPU but its fact that gets identified in Windows / CPU-Z as an Octa. Hence this is the reason why its categorized in HWBot as 8 core. Though I have to admit, because of the performance I was really thinking about putting them in the quad core category.

Im just pasting this:

4 modules 8 threads was the technical explantion i was given by engineers prior to launch in amds lab.

Of course marketing told me it was a true 8 core.

Glad to see the R7 Ryzens are no longer unfairly pitched against the older FX series.
Thanks

Best explanation by Strunkenbold.
FX has 8 integer cores but only 4 floating point units.
Every 2 cores share a floating point unit hence 4 modules.

It's actually not quite as simple as that. It does have 2 128 bit FPUs per module, however for 256 bit fp instructions they combine into "1" fpu. So it's hard to say that there's only 1 but also hard to say that there's 2 proper fpus. However if you look at jaguar, and arch that some laud as AMD not being special and giving each core it's own FPU. It has a 128 bit FPU per core, and they can't combine into 1 256 bit fpu, so in 256 bit fp instructions it has a huge penalty vs fx. So yes FX does in fact have 8 full cores, it even has dedicated cache per "core". However within a module a core is able to share some of those resources if load requires it. It's no different than sharing l3 cache within a ccx on ryzen. (I know that how it's actually allocated is a bit different, but it's a similar concept)
