The fourth installment of this year?s Old School is Best School contest is about to get underway on OC-ESPORTS and this time around there is an added twist with two Intel Socket platforms allowed; the Intel Socket 478 and Socket 479. Why two? Well, if your memory serves you rightly you will recall that Socket 478 is a bonafide desktop PC socket while Socket 479 was in fact a mobile PC platform. The twist involves the fact that back in the day, it was possible to run mobile CPUs on desktop boards thanks to specialized adapters that were available. On the VGA side of things, Round 4 invites us to dust off our old Radeon 9000 series cards. Read on for a detailed breakdown.

Old School is Best School 2016 Round 4: April 1st - 30th

Just to keep you up to speed, the Old School is Best School contest on OC-ESPORTS is a team overclocking contest that invites overclockers from all walks of life and backgrounds to compete on old hardware that your mother probably threw away after you went to college.

In Round 4 the challenge is to dig out your Intel Pentium 4 and Pentium M CPUs as well as some classic Radeon video cards - all dated back from around 2004-2005. As well as being a chance for the oldtimers to reminisce the good old days, it?s also a chance for younger overclockers to get a taste of what overclocking was like back in the day.

As with all Old School is Best School contests, we have two distinct Stages involving specific hardware and benchmarks:

  • Stage 1: 3DMark03 - Socket 478 / 479 Processor + ATI Radeon 9000
  • Stage 2: SuperPI 1M - Socket 478 / 479 Processor

The inclusion of two possible socket types offers the chance to bench on a mobile or desktop CPU. In today?s world that would mean using a desktop PC or mobile device, which would be a little odd as mobile chips are are usually inferior in terms of core-counts, cache and clock speeds. Besides overclocking on a notebook BIOS can be quite limiting, to say the least.

Back in the 2004 or so, the case was a little different. Firstly, because mobile processors from Intel actually used a flip-chip, pin grid array socket that was basically the same as its desktop counterpart with the exception of one pin. This is in stark comparison to today?s mobile processors are almost always soldered onto the motherboard.

The cool thing about this era was that companies like ASUS offered special adapter boards which allowed users to plug a mobile chip into a desktop board. This was an attractive prospect at the time because the mobile Pentiums were actually highly binned parts that had plenty of headroom once they were cooled sufficiently.

The real question in this round is in fact whether or not a Pentium M will win the day, or not. There has already been some discussion in the matter on the Round 4 contest page (where we are reminded, quite humorously that overclockers tend to agree on absolutely nothing): http://oc-esports.io/#!/round/osibs_s2r4/comments/discussion/153784/discussion

The ATi Radeon 9000 series adds plenty of extra retro spice to the occasion with the top dog of the time, the Radeon 9800 XT in huge demand here. Many of us will remember the 9800 cards fondly as the gaming beasts they were at the time. For myself, I remember being deeply envious of the fact that I didn?t own one. I recall drooling over its huge heatsink (for the time it really was massive) and the fact that it needed additional power from the PSU via a standard molex drive adapter. The inclusion of 3DMark03 will also provide an nice walk down memory lane for the old folks, while SuperPi 1M will sort the men from the men when it comes to tweaking.

(The ATi Radeon 9800Xt in all its glory)

The Old School is Best School contest has teams that span the globe. Retro overclockers from the US, Bulgaria, Sweden, Czech, Italy, Hungary and Germany are always happy to add new members if you have the right retro chops. If like the idea of benching some classic, old school hardware get yourself enrolled in a team and get pushing.
