Intel OEM engineers face five years in jail (for selling sample CPUs on the sly)

Guess you're warned ... ;-)

Four engineers working for Intel's OEM partners behind the bamboo curtain have been arrested trying to sell sample CPUs on Ebay.

The Taiwan Criminal Investigation Bureau swooped on the four in Taoyuan for their role in selling engineering sample CPUs online for fun and profit. Speaking to the China Post, a Bureau spokesman said the gang of four were all engineers working for Intel's OEM manufacturers in Taiwan although he did not say which ones.

The Bureau had a nose around the suspects' houses last month and confiscated 178 sample CPUs, which were reportedly worth around $800,000.

The suspects admitted that they had sold over 500 engineering sample CPUs since 2009 during initial investigations. Each of the CPUs were beta versions of the integrated circuits that are meant only to be used for compatibility qualification tests. Intel loans them to OEM manufacturers prior to commercial releases for product development. Any samples have strict non-disclosure agreements and are not for sale, the CIB said. But the samples are sold cheap and are quite popular because sometimes they have unlocked multipliers. The engineers are facing five years of porridge.

hahah sooo true^^^ Last best ES=Gulftown.

I wonder who this pertains too, how can you hide 100s of CPUs, unless maybe over time. The price is a bit much, but what about TW converted into USD and currency weight? Or maybe they go off ebay prices these guys sold the CPUs at? Like you see some very expensive ES CPUs being sold by some members... Extremely too high.

How many people would pay that much on a product with no warranty and which is not even really yours and you can get arrested for? hahah

BTW OMG nice way that guy was very discrete, right? lol I think the investigators had a lot of their job done for them! lol wow, just wow.

It depends, SB never had a reputation of dying east and west like Gulftown CPUs. If the chip won't die, then who cares about warranty

I see a few familiar names in his buyer list.

Heh, this is exactly why Overclockers will never sell an ES CPU. We'll torture them until they die but never will they be sold!

I've also bought some old CPUs from him back in the day. Mostly because they were cheaper than retail :P

SB can die very easily. 5.7GHz CPU worked OK for ~ 3/4 of year, all of the sudden it kills two Moonman boards (didn't know that at the time). I bring my board, we plug in the cpu followed by the blue smoke of death, here goes the third...
